Therapeutic Riding: A mounted, traditional riding disciplines or adaptive riding activities conducted by a certified instructor in private or group lessons. Activities are designed to meet each participant’s needs and may focus on fine/gross motor skills development, balance, strength or coordination. Each riding experience is designed specifically to match participants needs, in a private or group setting. Therapeutic riding is recreational horseback riding lessons adapted to individuals with disabilities. Therapeutic riding is completed by a certified therapeutic horseback riding instructor in conjunction with volunteers. Horses used for therapeutic riding instruction have been screened to make sure they have the appropriate
temperment for this job. Because therapeutic riding is an adaptive/recreational/sport activity, NOT therapy, it is not covered by insurance.
Therapeutic Horsemanship: A un-mounted method of activities for students that may be physically limited for riding or are afraid of riding. Based on their participant interview, some participants may be enrolled into the Therapeutic Horsemanship program instead of Therapeutic Riding. Un-mounted Therapeutic Horsemanship is just as powerful as Therapeutic Riding. Un-mounted activities build confidence, teach leadership and life skills. Fine and gross motor skills develop from grooming, bathing or leading the horse through obstacle courses. Our instructors will tailor your un-mounted experience to match participants needs.
